Stan Wawrinka on Roger Federer's proposal to merge ATP and WTA

Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka says when Roger Federer proposes something everyone listens.

Last week, record 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer suggested this could be the perfect time for the ATP and WTA to merge.

The 38-year-old exactly clarified what he meant when he made a public proposal.

"Roger's tweet has surprised everyone because it comes from the greatest player. In general, when he says something, it is with hindsight and a real thought," Wawrinka told L'Equipe, as revealed on We Love Tennis France.

"When Roger speaks, it moves the lines much faster. He is on the players' council, he talks with Novak, with Rafa. But these are not discussions that are starting now. They have existed for a while within the authorities.

"It's complicated to set up and that's why it takes time. If ATP and WTA find the right formula, it can be interesting for the future of tennis."

Rafael Nadal, a 19-time Grand Slam champion and one of Federer's biggest on-court rivals, agreed with the Swiss.
