Novak Djokovic criticized by a former world no. 1: 'You need to pay'

After Adria Tour got cancelled following Novak Djokovic’s positive COVID-19 test, Ilie Năstase, one of the best players of the 1970s and former world number one, criticized the decision made by the current leader of the ATP Tour to organize the controversial exhibition event.

In an interview for a Romanian publication, Năstase attacked the Serbian’s lack of responsibility. “He knew that it was a risk since there were so many spectators there (during the Adria Tour). Now, I think he settled down. When everyone else in the world is crazy and he is smart, this is what happens. I do not wish for anyone to get hurt, but if you take such a decision you have to own it,” said Năstase for Newsweek Romania.

Moreover, Năstase saw no well-founded argument in commencing Adria Tour in the first place, especially as the event was just an exhibition.

”If everyone abides by the rules and it is true what everyone says – that the virus is very dangerous – then we have to respect them (the rules). But if you don’t want to respect, then you need to pay. Why did Djokovic need this tournament? He hadn’t had enough money? He couldn’t play alone with another boy? This tournament was useless, especially as it wasn’t something official."

Novak Djokovic explained the reason behind starting Adria Tour

After he received severe criticism from many parties involved in the tennis world, Djokovic stepped forward with a statement, showing his regret for the unfortunate turnout of the Adria Tour.

“I am so deeply sorry that our tournament has caused harm. Everything we did in the past month; we did with a pure heart and sincere intentions. Our tournament meant to unite and share a message of solidarity and compassion throughout the region… It was all born with a philanthropic idea, to direct all raised funds towards people in need and it warmed my heart to see how everybody strongly responded to this,” said Nole.

“Unfortunately, this virus is still present, and it is a new reality that we are still learning to cope and live with… I am extremely sorry for each case of infection. I hope that it will not complicate anyone’s health situation and that everyone will be fine,"
