Garbine Muguruza plans to play US Open and French Open

Former World No. 1 Garbine Muguruza says she hopes to play the US Open and all possible tournaments as long as it remains safe to do so and the health situation permits her to do so.

The two-time Grand Slam champion Muguruza, of Spain, was speaking online in a show for Caser Seguros, the company of which she is a brand ambassador.

The Spaniard says she is "a born competitor" and is looking forward to coming back on the tour. She also says that has plans to play the American tournaments in preparation for the US Open and the clay court circuit that would end at Roland Garros if the situation allows it.

The Spaniard also said that it would be difficult to play on the courts without fans but hopes that they will come back in limited numbers as the months progress and the health situation improves.

Muguruza added that mental toughness is going to be the key for tennis players when they return. "It is a question of resistance and mental strength. Whoever is stronger will have the easiest path to victory."

Several players, especially those who are based in Europe, have expressed their concerns about travelling to the United States to play the US Open and the warm-up events due to the current health crisis. It remains to be seen which players will end up competing in New York in the coming days.

Garbiñe Muguruza has won seven singles titles, including two Grand Slams - the 2016 French Open and the 2017 Wimbledon Championships. She has also won five doubles titles, finishing runner-up at the 2015 WTA Finals and reaching the 2014 French Open semifinals with compatriot Carla Suárez Navarro. The Spaniard began the 2020 season by beating four seeded players, including 5th seed Elina Svitolina, 4th seed Simona Halep and 9th seed Kiki Bertens to reach her fourth Grand Slam final, and first ever final at the Australian Open where she lost to 14th seed Sofia Kenin in three sets. In 2017, Muguruza announced that she had become an Ambassador for the international education NGO Room to Read and wanted to help the organisation to grow its impact in two focus areas of early grade literacy and equal access to secondary education for girls.
