Rohan Bopanna confirms US Open participation: I’m not really sure what to expect

Indian doubles tennis star Rohan Bopanna says he has mixed feelings about getting back on the tour, as he prepares to return to the ATP circuit to play the upcoming events in New York and Europe. Bopanna will compete in the Western & Southern Open and the US Open in New York and also plans to play in the Rome Masters and French Open in Paris in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, his former partner Aisam Qureshi, of Pakistan, will also compete in the US Open.

The 40 year old Bopanna will partner with Canadian Denis Shapovalov in these tournaments Speaking to the Hindustan Times, Bopanna says, "Mixed feelings about being back (on the Tour). I love competing and am really happy to be back. Having said that, the tournaments will feel different with no people watching. There are so many restrictions with the US Open in terms of the (halved) doubles draw and no singles qualifying. So, yes, it’s a Grand Slam, but it’s kind of a closed Grand Slam. So I’m not really sure what to expect."

The Indian says he is going to New York with an open mind and is satisfied with some of the protocols being put in place by the organisers. “I’m going with an open mind. Once we get there I think we’ll have a better idea of how things are. But there will be no access to Manhattan or any restaurants or anything else. It’s just tennis courts and back. So I’ll kind of be in another lockdown, only this time in New York!”

The US Open is the tournament where Rohan Bopanna has had his best men's doubles result. He reached the final of the 2010 US Open with Qureshi where they lost to the top ranked Bryan Brothers, of the United States. The Pakistani doubles ace will play with Britain’s Dominic Inglot in the US Open, according to the Daily Pakistan and posted an update on his Twitter account saying he was all set and clear to travel again after 6 months.
