Uncertainities has Bianca Andreescu extending her court absences
"...I realize that the unforeseen challenges...have compromised my ability to prepare and compete...at my highest level...", says Bianca Andreescu, ranked no. 6 in the world and the top ranked female Canadian player. She had made a difficult choice about her career but there was no other way. It was weeks that everyone in the tennis community wanted to know if Andreescu would come back to New York and defend her title. But there were too many uncertainities that had Canadian's lady no. 1 push back her court appearances until another time.
The bubbly teen had tennis in the palm of her hands when she had gotten into the WTA Finals in Shenzhen last November only to be sidetracked by a knee injury causing her to delay competition, get treatment and rehab. She would later get into the BNP Paribas Indian Wells tournament and capture the title over Germany's Angelique Kerber in a three set tubulent match. But Andreescu was struck down with a shoulder injury at the French Open. She again struggled to get therapy and to rehab. She went on to appear in her hometown Canada's Rogers Cup. It was her abilities and reputation on the line but she dug in and captured the title over a Serena Williams who had to retire due to an upper back injury. "...I know how she feels...injuries really, really suck", Andreescu had said upon sympathizing with Serena Williams unable to finish the match because of her injury. The young Canadian admitted that "It's not the way I wanted to win, but a win is a win so I'm really happy:, Andreescu said truthfully upon making history being the first Canadian to win the title in over twenty years. Afterwards came the US Open where she'd be matched up with Serena Williams again to win in straight sets.
But no one knows what the future will bring and this March, things crashed for everyone especially the tennis world when the coronavirus pandemic hit. Tournaments were cancelled and some postponed. No one was sure when and where the next event would ever come. She was still rehabbing her knee injury and wasn't able to defend her title at Indian Wells. The Rogers Cup was cancelled and with the coronavirus still not completely erased from the world there are tangibles Bianca Andreescu must face.
The two serious injuries, her knee and should haven't permitted her to go out on the court full force and play as Andreescu is used to.Then it's the world health crisis that isn't yet contained. It's too much of a chance to take and put her team at risk. It was her instagram that she laid her truths on the line saying "...I have made the difficult decision not to return to New York this year. I realize that the unforeseen...including the Covid pandemic...I have taken this step to focus on my match fitness...I look forward to joining my competitors back on court soon." Everyone is wondering when will the pandemic be over as well as when will Bianca Andreescu come back on the court and give the great performance she did on her last time in competition?
