ATP Hamburg: John Peers, Michael Venus only second team to win multiple times in 2020

Australian John Peers and New Zealand's Michael Venus made it all the way at the Hamburg European Open after beating Croatian's Ivan Dodig and Mate Pavic in the final. 

Peers and Venus handed Dodig and Pavic a straight-set defeat in the Hamburg final 6-3 6-4 to become the second team this year with multiple ATP titles. 

Peers and Venus had the first break points of the match but Dodig and Pavic saved two consecutive break points in the fourth game to level the opener at two games apiece.

But in the eighth game, Peers and Venus realized their third break point to take a 5-3 lead and then had no problems serving out for the opener in the following game.

After a bad start to the first set, Dodig and Pavic made a strong start to the third set as they took an early 3-0 second set lead.

But their lead didn't last long as Peers and Venus claimed back-to-back breaks to win five games in a row and take a 5-3 second set lead.

Dodig and Pavic served out to love the ninth game to stop Peers and Venus' -- then had a great chance to break back their opponents -- but failed to convert any of their three break point chances in the 10th game.

Venus and Peers happy with their Hamburg campaign 

"It has been a great week here. [It was the] perfect preparation going into next week in Paris,” Venus said, per the ATP website. “We got plenty of quality matches. It was a really tough draw. We are really excited and hopefully we can keep building on it.

"We just hung in there [and] played a really clean, really good first set. Then, to be honest, we got lucky to break back in the second set and just took our chances when we had them. I just thought we kept going, not really worried about the score and just kept playing tennis and kept going and competing. I think that was the difference today.”

Meanwhile, Peers said: "I enjoy coming back to Hamburg. It is always a good city to come back to and I actually enjoyed playing on the Centre Court. It is a lot of fun. We just continue to build and keep working hard week-to-week and day-to-day. It has been really good to get through the tough draw here, [with] quality matches every time. For us to play the level we did was fantastic.”
