Benoit Paire: Two positive tests, one negative, I was allowed to play Hamburg
World No. 25 Benoit Paire tested positive for the coronavirus twice in Hamburg but he was allowed to play the tournament after his third test came back as negative.
Paire, a former world No. 18, retired his Hamburg first round clash against Casper Ruud while down 6-4 2-0.
Previously, Paire was removed from the US Open after testing positive for the coronavirus just before the start of the tournament.
"I was already 10 days in a hotel room during the US Open and now again. I'm tired. Practice one hour then go into your room, it's impossible to do this for a long time. Right now, I was tired and had to stop," Paire said in his press conference after retiring against Ruud, as revealed by Jannik Schneider.
"Yes, I was positive here in Hamburg since I arrived. The only negative test I got yesterday. Before that two in a row I was positive. But the rule seems different here. So the ATP has to explain what is the rule? Because in Paris I saw players negative but because the coach is positive they can't play. Here in Germany you are tested positive and you can play. So again thank you to the tournament and the doctor here in Hamburg that I can play. But there are some rules I obviously don't understand too much," Paire said.
Paire contacted the French Open officialsFrench tennis star Paire has already contacted the French Open to explain his case.
But the Frenchman admitted even he is feeling a bit confused about everything regarding the coronavirus.
"Yeah I had contact with the French Open because I had to explain the situation. I told them I was already positive so it cannot be that I'm positive again. The only thing is that the rule is different here in Germany. I think the tournament here managed the situation better. But in France it's different. If you have one positive result you are out of the tournament. And I had the virus before so now it can be like a little rest of the virus somewhere. And it seems that you can have the virus again after you tested positive in the past. But honestly I don't understand so much. But the thing I know is: I was positive here and I could play the match so that is good but if I arrive in Paris like this I can't play," Paire added.
