Adelaide International: Shelby Rogers upsets Johanna Konta in 2R

In the only pre-quarter-final match at the Adelaide International on Tuesday, Shelby Rogers upset third seed Johanna Konta. The American won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and 16 minutes.

Rogers finished with 23 winners and 10 unforced errors for the match. In the quarter-finals, Rogers will play either sixth seed Petra Martic or Coco Gauff.

In her first-round match, Martic came from a set down to oust Russian qualifier Liudmila Samsonova 4-6, 6-0, 7-5. Martic’s second-round opponent, Gauff, meanwhile defeated fellow qualifier Jasmine Paolini 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-2 in their first-round clash.

Adelaide International: Seeds continue their march

Seventh seed Yulia Putintseva also advanced to the second round on Tuesday. The Kazakh beat German Laura Siegemund 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. Speaking to the press after her win, Putintseva shared how tough the match was despite the simple-looking score.

Putintseva said, “I never had such a tough opponent who was trying to do everything possible to win the match. She was doing everything on court - slicing, dropshots, coming to net. So, I was mentally ready for no rhythm at all. I was just trying to move my feet as fast as I can and to find the right shot to finish it.”

In the second round, Putintseva will face Australian qualifier Storm Sanders. Sanders came through in the first-round derby against wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic 6-1, 6-2. In the same section, Japanese lucky loser Misaki Doi defeated Anna Blinkova 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-2 in the first round. Doi will face second seed Belinda Bencic in the round-of-16.

In another Australian derby, qualifier Maddison Inglis defeated Samantha Stosur in the first round. Inglis came from a set down to claim a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4. She will play fifth seed Iga Swiatek next. The Pole got past Madison Brengle in the opening round 6-3, 6-4.

Jil Teichmann also booked her place in the round-of-16 at the Adelaide International. The Swiss defeated Kristina Mladenovic 6-2, 7-6(5) and will play the eighth-seeded Qiang Wang next.
