Charleston Open: Amanda Anisimova, Alize Cornet, Paula Badosa score 3-set wins

Tenth-seeded Elena Rybakina was the only seed to crash out on the opening day of main draw play at the Charleston Open on Monday. The Kazakh retired with an illness in her first-round match against American Cathy McNally after losing the opening set 6-4.

In the second round, McNally will play either Anastasija Sevastova or Anastasia Potapova.

Spain’s Paula Badosa set up a second-round clash against fifth seed Belinda Bencic. Badosa won 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 against Varvara Gracheva. Amanda Anisimova also made a comeback from a set down in her first-round match against Magda Linette. The 13th-seeded American won 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 after exactly two hours of play.

Meanwhile, at the top of the draw, top-seed Ashleigh Barty will take on Misaki Doi in the second round. Doi defeated Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 6-3 in the first round.

Doi’s compatriot, Kurumi Nara will play ninth seed Marketa Vondrousova in the second round. Nara won her first round against Francesca Di Lorenzo of the United States, 6-2, 6-2.

Veronika Kudermetova, seeded 15th in the draw, ousted another American, qualifier Desirae Krawczyk in the first round. The Russian won 6-1, 6-2 in just 54 minutes. In the second round, Kudermetova could play either Mexican Renata Zarazua or American wildcard Emma Navarro.

Marie Bouzkova and Ajla Tomljanovic will play the second round after coming through their respective openers. The 17th seed from the Czech Republic defeated Timea Babos 6-2, 7-5 while the Australian ousted Christina McHale 6-3, 6-0.

Charleston Open: Yulia Putintseva staves off late lucky loser 

In the second half, Polish qualifier Magdalena Frech set up a second-round match against sixth seed Garbine Muguruza. Frech advanced after winning her first round against fellow qualifier, Grace Min of the US, 6-2, 6-4.

Yulia Putintseva also moved into the second round after a 7-6(8), 6-4 win over lucky loser Harriet Dart. Dart replaced Andrea Petkovic in the draw after the 2014 Charleston Open champion was forced to exit the event with an injury to her lower back. The 11th-seeded Putintseva will play compatriot Zarina Diyas for a place in the third round. Diyas defeated qualifier Natalia Vikhlyantseva 6-3, 6-1.

Australian qualifier Storm Sanders has booked a second-round meeting against third seed Petra Kvitova. Sanders got past fellow qualifier Asia Muhammad 6-2, 6-4.

Alize Cornet, meanwhile, claimed a three-set win over Bernarda Pera to reach the round-of-32. The Frenchwoman notched a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback win after two hours and 53 minutes of play, and will next take on seventh seed Elise Mertens.

Lastly, Lauren Davis completed the list of winners at the Charleston Open on Monday. Davis won the American derby against Madison Brengle 6-4, 6-2 and will contest another derby, against the second-seeded Sofia Kenin to try and reach the third round.
