Bianca Andreescu: "Positivity to the swab? The first days were complicated"

Bianca Andreescu has experienced a real ordeal in recent seasons due to her knee injury. Suffice it to say that she did not play any games in 2020 and that, before returning to the field this year at the Australian Open, her last official match was at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen 2019.

Andreescu's talent blossomed in 2019 with the victories of the Indian Wells tournament, the Rogers Cup and above all the US Open. The Canadian then also had to deal with Covid-19 and with yet another physical problem also in 2021.

In the first case, she was forced to miss the Masters 1000 in Madrid and Rome, in the second she was forced to withdraw from the semifinal of the Miami tournament. Andreescu is now back on the pitch at the WTA in Strasbourg, where she clearly defeated Spain’s Andrea Lazaro Garcia on her debut.

"I went through very hard times, I can't lie," said the Canadian at a press conference. "When I received the news about Covid-19 positivity, I was incredulous. I tested negative twice, I reached Madrid on Friday and on Saturday the swab gave a positive result. It was all very strange. The truth is, you can never be sure with Covid-19.

The first few days were really complicated, but luckily I didn't have any serious symptoms, just a slight cough. When I managed to recover, I still had to stop for more than 10 days and this interrupted my journey.

But it's still a pandemic and you can't control everything. I have always been careful and in Miami, despite the few restrictions, we have done everything possible to avoid being infected. Clay-courts? I love to play on this surface. I feel fit and I think I can do well. I have worked hard in the last period, I think I proved it in Miami, and I want to continue on this path. I hope I can do well, because my game adapts quite well to clay courts."
