Roland Garros: the best matches of all time

The Roland Garros 2021, unlike what happened last year with the autumn edition, will be held at the end of May and at the beginning of the day, for a Parisian fortnight of incredible emotions. Due to covid-19, the Bois de Boulogne Grand Slam will be postponed for only one week, for two weeks that have given historic moments over the years.

The Roland Garros was famous also for its amazing matches, like the one between René Lacoste and Bill Tilden in 1927. The final won in that season by the French icon (6-4, 4-6, 5-7, 6-3, 11 -9) remains one of the best matches ever in Paris. He beat the American after five unforgettable sets, winning his second title in Paris, in an era dominated by French players.

The edition after the Second World War was won by Margaret Osborne against her countrywoman Pauline Betz, at the end of an exciting challenge, with the final score of 1-6, 8-6, 7-5. The epilogue of 1962 Between Rod Laver and Roy Emerson saw Laver's triumph over his countryman for 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 9-7, 6-2, after a very beautiful match.

Roland Garros: the best matches of all time

The epic challenges between Gaston Gaudio and Guillermo Coria in 2004, won by Gaudio, between Bjorn Borg and Manuel Orantes in 1973, won by the Swedish and between Jennifer Capriati and Kim Clijsters in 2001, won by the US, cannot be forgotten.

In 1985, Chris Evert won his sixth Parisian title, defeating Martina Navratilova for 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-5. It was a great challenge, one of the best in women's singles. In 1996, Steffi Graf defeated Arantxa Sánchez Vicario with the final score of 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-8. Graf needed an unforgettable third set to finally fold the resistance of her opponent with which she had clashed twice in a few years.

Roger Federer's victory against Tommy Haas in 2009 was incredible and unforgettable. The Swiss Maestro, after being on the brink of the abyss, won after five thrilling sets for 6-7 (4), 5-7, 6-4, 6-0, 6-2, and completed the career Slam. Incredible shots, rallies and emotions; the epic semi-final of 2013 between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic was probably one of the best matches ever in Paris. A battle won by Nadal for 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-7 (3), 9-7.
