2020 Tokyo Games: Marketa Vondrousova stuns Naomi Osaka in 3R

Second seed Naomi Osaka was ousted in the second round of the 2020 Tokyo Games on Tuesday. The Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova won against the world no. 2 6-1, 6-4 in an hour and eight minutes.

Vondrousova lost serve just once while converting five of the 11 break points on Osaka’s serve. The 2019 French Open finalist hit 18 winners to Osaka’s 15 and had just 10 unforced errors to the latter’s 32.

Osaka was visibly disappointed with her loss. Speaking with the media, she acknowledged that she was under pressure to do well, given the occasion. “I’m disappointed in every loss, but I feel like this one sucks more than the others. I definitely feel like there was a lot of pressure for this. I think it’s maybe because I haven’t played in the Olympics before and for the first year (it) was a bit much.”

Meanwhile, in the quarter-finals, the 42nd ranked Vondrousova – the last Czech remaining in the draw – will play Spain’s Paula Badosa. Badosa defeated Argentine Nadia Podoroska 6-2, 6-3.

Badosa’s compatriots, Garbine Muguruza and Sara Sorribes Tormo had contrasting results in their pre-quarter-final matches.

The seventh-seeded Muguruza won against Alison van Uytvanck 6-1, 6-4. In the quarter-final, the former world no. 1 will play 15th seed Elena Rybakina. The Kazakh defeated Croatia’s Donna Vekic 7-6(3), 6-4.

At the top of the draw, 13th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova brought an end to Sorribes Tormo’s Olympic campaign. The Russian won 6-1, 6-3 and set up a quarter-final showdown against eighth seed Belinda Bencic. The Swiss defeated the reigning French Open champion and ninth seed Barbora Krejcikova 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 in their round-of-16 clash.

Italian Camila Giorgi upset the fifth seed Karolina Pliskova. Giorgi won 6-4, 6-2 against the Czech. For a place in the semi-final of the 2020 Tokyo Games, Giorgi will take on fourth seed Elina Svitolina. The Ukrainian came through a battle against Greek Maria Sakkari, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Following the exit of Naomi Osaka, Svitolina’s also the highest seed left in the women’s singles draw at the Olympics.
