Mikael Ymer reacts to stunning Pablo Cuevas in Kitzbuhel opener
Rising Swedish star Mikael Ymer insists he plans to take it match by match this week in Kitzbuhel.
Ymer, ranked at No. 99 in the world, made a positive start to his Kitzbuhel campaign as he saw off former world No. 19 Pablo Cuevas 6-3 7-5.
Ymer, a former world No. 67, is having his debut campaign on the clay courts of Kitzbuhel.
Last week, Ymer made the Gstaad quarterfinal before losing to Vit Kopriva.
“I try to take one day at a time and just focus on what I’m working on. Today, it went very well and I was able to commit to what I was trying to do, even though it was tough in some parts of the match,” Ymer said in his on-court interview, per the ATP website. “That’s the most positive [part] of the day and that I managed to win in the end is also a big bonus.”
Ymer surprised CuevasYmer made the best possible start to the match, having claimed the first break of the match in the second game en route to taking an early 3-0 lead.
After breaking Cuevas in the second game, Ymer held on to his serve the rest of the set to win the opener.
After winning the first set, Ymer had a chance to start the second set with a break but Cuevas saved two break points in the first game.
Cuevas then earned his first break of the match in the following game to take a 2-0 lead.
Unfortunately for the Uruguayan, his lead was short-lived as Ymer broke back in the third game.
Cuevas saved a break point in the ninth game to take a 5-4 lead but then failed to convert any of his two set points in the following game.
Cuevas paid the price for failing to convert any of his two set points as Ymer broke in the 11th game and served out for the match in the 12th game.
