Andy Murray awarded wild card into Cincinnati Masters

Former world No. 1 Andy Murray has been awarded a wild card into the Cincinnati Masters.

Murray, now ranked at No. 105 in the world, is set to return to singles action next week.

Murray last played singles at Wimbledon, where he made the third round before losing to Denis Shapovalov.

Murray was also due to play singles at the Tokyo Olympics but he pulled out of the event.

However, Murray played in the Tokyo Olympics doubles event alongside Joe Salisbury.

Murray and Salisbury ended up losing in the quarterfinal and the former world No. 1 was disappointed after failing to win a medal.

"I don't know if I'll get the opportunity to play again," Murray said following the defeat, as quoted on Sky Sports.

"I've loved every minute of playing in the Olympics. I wish that today could have gone differently.

"I had another chance with Joe to win a medal, we were so close, and that's what's disappointing. I would like to have done some stuff differently in the match to try to help out more.

"I'll see how the injury heals. That's what will dictate it. I'm not going to rush something if it's not there.

"My team think I should be OK to play the US Open, judging by how I felt in matches here. It's not as physical as singles but there's a lot of explosive movements and my leg felt fine."

Rising stars join Murray in Cincinnati

Rising American stars Jenson Brooksby, Brandon Nakashima and Frances Tiafoe have also been awarded wild cards into the Cincinnati Masters.

A couple of days ago, three-time Grand Slam champion Murray spoke positively of recent Newport runner-up Brooksby.

"Jenson Brooksby is the sort of player I love to watch…lots of variety..high tennis IQ….great in defence.. His slice and backhand volley are almost identical to Florián Mayer," Murray tweeted.
