Felix Auger-Aliassime: Good that I can also win matches on ugly way
Rising Canadian star Felix Auger-Aliassime admitted his win over Andreas Seppi didn't come on a great way but he was happy that he managed to escape an early exit at the Citi Open in Washington.
Auger-Aliassime, who is enjoying a career-high ranking of No. 15 in the world, recovered from a set down to beat world No. 88 Andreas Seppi 2-6 6-2 6-2.
Auger-Aliassime, seeded at No. 2, had a first round bye in Washington.
The Canadian is now through to the round-of-16 after beating Seppi.
“To dig deep and to find a way to, I guess, win ugly in a way and come back from really a poor set of tennis in the first, to come back and win it – yeah, it's good that I can also win matches that way,” Auger-Aliassime said, per the ATP website. “Not only playing my best tennis and winning in straight sets.”
Auger-Aliassime bounced back in styleAuger-Aliassime served out the opening game of the match but then dropped serve in back-to-back games as Seppi took a comfortable 5-1 lead.
Auger-Aliassime saved two break points in the seventh game to end Seppi's five-game run but the Italian served out for the opener in the following game.
After easily losing the first set, Auger-Aliassime made a perfect start to the second set, having taken an early 3-0 lead.
The Canadian then earned his second break of the match in the eighth game to force a decider.
After easily winning the second set, Auger-Aliassime broke Seppi in the second game to take an early 2-0 third-set lead.
Seppi broke back in the third game but once agan lost his serve in the fourth game as Auger-Aliassime took a 3-1 lead.
Auger-Aliassime then earned his third break of the set in the eighth game to complete a comeback win.
Auger-Aliassime plays next against Jenson Brooksby, who beat Frances Tiafoe.
Auger-Aliassime and Brooksby have no previous meetings.
