Jenson Brooksby reacts to getting revenge over Kevin Anderson in Washington

Rising American star Jenson Brooksby was "proud" of himself after managing to beat former world No. 5 Kevin Anderson at the Citi Open in Washington. 

Brooksby, who received a wild card for Washington, is having his debut at the tournament. 

On Monday, Brooksby played his first-ever match in Washington as he beat Anderson 7-6 (4) 6-3. 

Brooksby is set to play next against fellow compatriot Frances Tiafoe. 

"I was really proud of myself to be able to get it back and win multiple [points] in a row to get the first set," Brooksby said, per the ATP website. "I kept my foot on the gas pedal, started returning better, got the break. Happy to close it out in straights."

Brooksby makes amends for the Newport final loss

Two weeks ago, Brooksby made his maiden ATP final in Newport before losing to Anderson. 

"I was definitely happy with how I ended the first set. Obviously two weeks ago in Newport, I had a lot of chances to break, and also in the tie-break," Brooksby said. "Didn't get it. That was definitely disappointing."

Anderson failed to convert the first break point of the match in the sixth game but also saved a break point in the ninth game. 

Anderson then had a chance to win the opener in the 12th game but Brooksby saved a set point to force a tie-break. 

After failing to convert a set point in the 12th game, Anderson made a positive start to the tie-break, having taken an early 4-1 lead. 

But Anderson's game then shut down in the next couple of points as Brooksby won six consecutive points to steal the opener from Anderson. 

Brooksby had the first break point of the second set in the sixth game but Anderson saved to level the set at three games apiece. 

Despite failing to convert a break point in the sixth game, Brooksby kept his focus as he broke Anderson in the eighth game and served out for the match a game later.
