'We never saw Roger Federer as a future star', says Robert
Roger Federer turned 40 yesterday, receiving many tributes from fellow tennis players and more. Few imagined that the Swiss would still be active in 2021, further testimony to the incredible longevity of this absolute sporting legend. It would be useless to deny that there is great uncertainty about the current conditions of King Roger, who played his last match at Wimbledon losing in the quarterfinals to Hubert Hurkacz. The former world number 1 missed the Tokyo Olympics due to a relapse in his operated knee, citing the same reason for the most recent forfeits in Toronto and Cincinnati. Given the premises, Federer will also be absent from the US Open in three weeks. The 20-time Grand Slam champion has played 19 games from the beginning of 2020 to the present, a number that speaks volumes about the difficulties facing him. His best seasonal results came in the Slams, with the round of 16 at Roland Garros and the quarterfinals at Church Road. Federer's parents - Robert and Lynette - were interviewed by 'Blick' magazine a few days before Roger's birthday.
Roger Federer turned 40"Roger Federer was fun, active, he always had a lot of friends. With him, there was always something going on. You could quickly see that he had a great urge to move. I was like that too, by the way," Lynette said. "It doesn't matter whether it's with a skateboard, on a bike, at the ping-pong table or while playing squash with Robbie. It was nice to see him having fun. It could be seen that it was not an obligation. He loved it. As soon as he was able to walk he always had to have a ball with him and he was playing football as soon as possible. People have often said how exceptional his talent was or how well he knew how to handle the ball from an early age. But we couldn't have foreseen the incredible success he had afterward," Lynette said. Robert Federer echoed his wife's sentiments. "We never saw him as a future star so we didn't live with that in mind. For a long time, we just waited to see how things were going to turn out," Robert said. After getting eliminated in the quarters of the Wimbledon Championships 2021, Federer is yet to return to the court. He hasn’t even begun his training sessions on the hard courts and in such a situation, fans are wondering whether he’ll play at the US Open 2021.
