Kiki Bertens to skip Fed Cup Tie against Canada in February
Tennis - Netherlands' top-ranked female tennis star Kiki Bertens has said she will skip the Fed Cup tie against Canada in February in order to focus on her own career, according to . NU Sport. The 27-year-old Bertens has climbed to No. 9 in the rankings this season and will play the WTA events in Doha and Dubai in February in order to focus on improving her ranking. With Bertens not playing, the team will likely consist of Arantxa Rus, Demi Schuurs, Lesley Kerkhove, Richèl Hogenkamp and Bibiane Schoofs.
The Dutch Fed Cup captain Paul Haarhuis says he is not perturbed as her absence is only for the next tie, "I am not worried about her presence for the future. At the next meeting, I just need her back in. Only when she says for five years that it does not suit her, I'm really worried. She said that she would make her choice in December, we spoke last week and she made it known."
The Dutch team will play in the Fed Cup World Group II in 2019 after losing to the United States in the 2018 World Group first round and then to Australia in the World Group play-offs. Meanwhile, Haarhuis has selected Robin Haase, Jean-Julien Rojer and Matwé Middelkoop for the Davis Cup clash against the Czech Republic. He will choose two more players from the trio of Thiemo de Bakker, Scott Griekspoor and Tallon Griekspoor in mid-January.
