Marat Safin: 'Roger Federer, Nadal, Djokovic are always fast'

In an interview to Sport.ru, the former world No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam winner Marat Safin spoke about how his life changed then the years when he was playing tennis. Safin said: 'I go to bed early, at 10-11:00 PM. I wake up at 8-10 AM, I walk, I travel. I do not play tennis. I sometimes go to the veteran tournaments, I prepare for two or three weeks. But, in general, what's the point in it? Imagine having worked as a journalist, to have ended your career and to have started working on it again. That's silly. So, I mostly go to the gym to stay in shape. Thrice a week I train for two hours to have a good weight.'

Safin ended his career at the 2009 Paris Masters losing to Juan Martin del Potro, at just 29 years of age. 'I had a lot of injuries', Safin admitted. 'I was playing for a year, I was not playing for a year. The last injury was a broken leg. And that's all. That's why I finished. If it wasn't for it, I may have continued to play. But no one knows.'

'Undergoing surgery would have not been possible', Safin explained. 'The chances that it would have turned successful is very low. I was told myself: "We do it for you, but it's risky. You will have to forget any sport for the rest of your life. Do you need it?" "No". It's the right decision.'

What caused this injury? 'Overstress. It was not possible to stop. I fought until the last, then it was too late. I did not stop, I thought it would have healed. It got worse. Consequently, I could not play. I had damages before. I broke all the possible muscles. Elbow, two ankles, back. The knee was the finish line. The doctors told me to stop and I continued for two more years. I came back, but I could not run anymore, I lost speed, the vision of some things. It's difficult to see that with Nadal, Federer, Djokovic.'
