David Ferrer: 'You cannot be world No. 3 without talent'
David Ferrer believes that his great tennis game, hard work, physical and mental strength were all the key to get to the top of tennis. Speaking to El Mundo, the former world No. 3, who will end his career at next year's Madrid Open, said: 'You cannot be world No. 3 without talent. Who says this does not know anything about tennis.'
Ferrer admitted that his bad physical condition was one of the biggest factors that led him to retire from tennis: 'I have pain. The Achilles tendon has been hurting me for five, six years and every time more. I hope that it gets healed while leaving the competition. But do not count on seeing me in a marathon. I cannot run more than 40 minutes.'
Commenting on whether you can be friend with a tennis player, Ferrer said: 'The co-living is easy, you have fair play. My best friens on Tour? Feliciano Lopez, Marc Lopez, Rafa Nadal. I would not be able to tell more. Because my two, three best friends are from Javea, not tennis. True or false: the biggest challenge of a tennis player is not to turn crazy, not hating tennis. I imagine that it happens in all the sports. Maturing is learning to take the bad part of the reality.'
Asked if he came to hate tennis, Ferrer replied: 'Hating no, but I went through bad moments. Being far away from the family, losing... But good moments compensate. You want to improve as a tennis player and for it you have no other solution than being a better person. You have to learn managing the frustration.'
