Roger Federer recalls fun week after becoming world No. 1 for first time
In an interview to DigiSport Roger Federer recalled the first week ever he spent as a world No. 1 back in February 2004 in Bucharest where he faced, with the Swiss team, Romania in Davis Cup. Federer and his teammates prevailed 3-2, and Roger defeated Victor Hanescu (7-6, 6-3, 6-1) and Andrei Pavel (6-3, 6- 2, 7-5). 'I remember it very well like if it was yesterday. After my semifinals win over Juan Carlos Ferrero at the Australian Open, I officially knew I would become the world No. 1. The day after I won the final over Marat Safin and on Wednesday night I reached Romania. I started training with the team and I played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I was very tired, but it was one of my best weeks in career because being the number one was something special for me. I could celebrate with friends and colleagues of the Davis Cup team. They were so nice. I spent a nice week in Bucharest, a place with pleasant memories for me.'
Commenting on his amazing comeback in 2017, Federer added: 'Clearly, I started the season with the desire to be healthy, to be playing tennis again and, after four or five tournaments, to feel myself being back. All this happened so fast, I managed to win in Australia where I had tried to do it for five years before getting injured. It's funny that it happened after a surgery and after the difficult time of last year. I was unbelievably happy to continue my good shape and win Indian Wells, which for me was a surprise as big as in Australia. It's an amazing return that I did not expect.'
