Roger Federer still on top; how can they criticize him for few defeats?
Roger Federer has just ended the season winning the Australian Open (his 20th Slam title), the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, the Mercedes Cup and the Swiss Indoors in Basel, his 99th career title. Great achievements that lead him more deeply into the legend of tennis.
It is true, there were many ups and downs, but how can they criticize a tennis player like Federer for a few defeats, after the great successes achieved in 2018? Undoubtedly there was some problem, but more from the point of view of mental solidity than from a physical standpoint.
Federer, after his victory in Rotterdam against Dimitrov, also returned briefly as the world no. 1 (he closed the year as the world no. 3 behind Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal). The defeat in the Indian Wells final against del Potro removed some certainty and confidence.
After that challenge, some disappointments came, like the defeat in the Miami Open first round against Thanasi Kokkinakis, the quarter-finals lost against Kevin Anderson at Wimbledon, when the Swiss was ahead by two-sets-to-love and had a match point in the third and the unpredictable defeat in the fourth round of the US Open, against John Millman.
However, the challenges lost against Kei Nishikori and Alexander Zverev at the ATP Finals were probably the two worst matches of the year for Federer, from the technical point of view, with incredible errors, epecially in response and with his forehand. Even his service didn't work well in those matches.
He has a lot riding at the Australian Open. Will Federer find his form again?
