Boris Becker: 'I don't know if Kyrgios paid money to Lahyani'

Speaking on Eurosport, Boris Becker commented on the umpire's behaviours during matches. Mohamed Lahyani was banned from officiating at the Beijing Open and Shanghai Masters last year after encouraging Nick Kyrgios to give his best against Pierre-Hugues Herbert at the US Open. Becker believes umpires should speak about such big situations. "We don’t hear enough when there’s a debate on difficult calls about umpires," said Becker. "I think sometimes they should come out. You mentioned Mohammad Lahyani, and I applaud him for doing what he’s done, and players step in his favour to say it’s a great call by the umpire in saving the match and saving Kyrgios... I don’t know if Kyrgios paid him some money from the prize money that he won because he came back in that match."

Becker added: "I think Lahyani should have been given the platform to explain why he has done what he has done. I think that would again add to the spectacle of the element of umpires."

Kyrgios lost to Milos Raonic in the first round of the 2019 Australian Open. The Australian was not selected for Australia's David Cup qualifiers tie on February 1st-2nd against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Australia will be hosting the tie in Adelaide. Lleyton Hewitt is the captain of the Australian team.
