Chris Evert explains why she called Halep's attitude 'unprofessional'
Last year at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells the 18-time Grand Slam champion Chris Evert had described Simona Halep's attitude as "unprofessional" during her straight-set loss, 6-3 6-0, against Naomi Osaka. In an interview to Fanarik, Evert explained why she used such strong words. 'Seriously, we have to look at the entire picture', the American said. 'Indian Wells was an unique moment for Simona in 2018. She had a greater year than the previous ones and she had a match where she lost without fighting. Give her some credit, because she deserves it! Why these kind of moments happen? Off court, Simona is such a nice and pleasant person, but when she heads into the court she is very hard with herself. When she feels the frustration of failures, she throws her racquet, she hits ball, argues! It was just once in a year, which means she had a good year.'
Evert thinks that Halep can have a lot more success in the future: 'She is the world No. 1, she got used to this position and I think she will win at least one more Grand Slam title.'
Halep said her preparation for this year's Australian Open was different than usual: 'It's not normal because the previous years I came earlier and I played maybe 10 matches before Melbourne. But this year was different. Everything was different. I work hard home. I don't want to say that I did nothing. For the last four weeks in December, I work hard. I was very professional. But also it was good to spend the time home. The balance was good. I'm not very far with my level. I feel good on court. I need just some matches.'
