I expect Hopman Cup to keep being played, says ITF President
Hopman Cup is backed by the International Tennis Federation, and the ITF President David Haggerty spoke about the future of the event that is set to disappear from the calendar in 2020. Tennis Australia signed a contract with ITF for the event to stay in Perth until 2022 and Haggerty expects it to continue. 'We’re just excited to continue to see Hopman Cup through because it is a great way to have the men and women playing', Haggerty told New York Times.
Ross Hutchins, a former player and currently part of the ATP Board, explained the reasons that led the organization to create the ATP Cup which means other tournaments will be axed. 'Ultimately we thought this time of year, leading into a Grand Slam, is important to do something major in, and that’s what we will target. This event will be a major event on the ATP Tour', said Hutchins.
ATP Cup is similar to the Davis Cup in some ways, but Haggerty insisted: 'I don’t think there is a fatigue of team events because it’s not something that we think is diluted, and they’re all slightly different.'
Speaking last week in a press conference, Roger Federer, who won the Hopman Cup with Belinda Bencic in 2018 and 2019, said: 'We as players hope that the Hopman Cup will survive, that Perth see great tennis in the future. I will support Perth and this city to keep having great quality tennis, because I think that's important. They have done an amazing job here, the players are super welcome and the crowds deserves it of course.'
