I was sure Serena Williams would have beaten Pliskova, says Corretja

Alex Corretja was surprised at seeing Karolina Pliskova defeating Serena Williams in the Australian Open quarter-finals on Wednesday. The Czech made a remarkable comeback to reach the semifinals. 'At 5-1 I was sure that Serena was going to win,' said Corretja on Eurosport. 'Pliskova did a lot of good things, Serena was struggling so much in the second set and then she got relaxed maybe thinking "it's done". Pliskova was dictating in the first set very well and middle of second set, but then she slowed down the pace a little bit.'

The former world no. 2 also previewed the upcoming semis between Naomi Osaka and Pliskova: 'They are gonna go for the shots. Naomi moves better, she defends better, but she looks great, she has this fighting spirit of never getting tired being helped by Conchita Martinez.'

Corretja also analyzed Naomi Osaka's win over Elina Svitolina: 'She was so aggressive, standing one meter in front of the baseline, she hit incredible forehands, so easy with the backhand. Svitolina could not do much, and now I am understanding why she will be one of the best in the next future.'

Petra Kvitova and Naomi Osaka are vying to win their first Australian Open title. As in 2018, the player who wins the title will become the new world no. 1, displacing Simona Halep in the rankings when they come out on Monday, 28th January. Caroline Wozniacki was the defending champion but lost to Maria Sharapova in the third round. In 2018, she had defeated Halep in the final and become the world no. 1. It was Wozniacki's first Major title.
