John McEnroe criticizes Nick Kyrgios for lack of fitness form
Nick Kyrgios already ended his Australian Open campaign as he lost to Milos Raonic in straight sets, 7-6 6-4 6-3. Once again, the Australian player is dealing with a knee injury that had already bothered him for several months during the 2018 season. The 23-year-old called the trainer several times in mid-match and, during his Nine9 commentary, the seven-time Grand Slam winner John McEnroe criticized Kyrgios's lack of fitness. "Does he not train enough because the body breaks down? Or does the body break down because you don't train enough", said McEnroe. "He wouldn't know because he hasn't trained hard enough to know. You've got to try the other way before you dismiss it."
McEnroe added: “You’ll know this if you have kids right – the old reverse psychology – you tell them exactly not what to do and maybe they’ll do what you want. But it’s hard to do that because you sort of tell them, ‘ You shouldn’t do this’, and you try to give them a recommendation and you would think Nick wouldn’t give that away (that he has a knee injury). But he thinks a little bit like a kid, he thinks, ‘I’m just going to show them and so then people see that I’m hurting so then that gives me an out in a way’. And then the other guy sort of doesn’t know exactly what to so he could let up and then maybe it (Kyrgios’ knee) loosens up and sort of goes away and then next thing you know he wins.”
Kyrgios, commenting on his loss, said: 'The way I played, I actually didn't play that bad. I actually thought I played okay. I competed well. I probably would have beaten 75% of the draw. But Milos played scarily.'
