John McEnroe praises Novak Djokovic's character following stunning comeback

John McEnroe praised Novak Djokovic's comeback to the top of tennis. The Serb won his third consecutive Grand Slam final in a row after the ones at last year's Wimbledon and US Open. “If we look at where Novak was a year ago, we didn’t know whether that was an imposter", said McEnroe on Eurosport. "Then he had surgery right after that and halfway through the year I believe he was 22 in the world coming into Wimbledon. The fact he could turn that around and finish as No 1 shows the sort of character he has and the ability when he’s fit. So he comes in as the big favourite obviously."

McEnroe also spoke highly of Lucas Pouille's campaign in the tournament. The Frenchman reached his maiden Grand Slam final. "I like Lucas Pouille a lot he’s got a lot of talent and a big game for not a particularly big guy", said the American. "And he’s played five Australian Opens and never won a single match, so I don’t think he was coming in with a lot of confidence. He lost all three matches at the Hopman Cup and lost in the first round in Sydney, so we didn’t really see this coming. So it appears that [coach] Amelie Mauresmo has made a big difference in a very short period of time."
