Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal likely to face off in semis - Navratilova
In an interview to Tennis Channel, the 18-time Grand Slam winner Martina Navratilova commented on the chances to see Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal facing each other in the Australian Open semi-finals. Navratilova believes the clash will happen. ‘They should play each other in the semi-finals, it looks like they will,' said Navratilova. 'On this court, as fast as its playing and the balls are kind of pellety as well, they’re faster than they were even last year… so I’d have to give an edge to Roger Federer at the moment.’
Federer and Nadal faced each other 37 times, with the Spaniard leading head to head meetings 22-15. However, the last five matches have been won by Federer. They last clashed each other in 2017 Shanghai final, the Swiss prevailed 6-4 6-3.
Federer will play Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round and could play Marin Cilic in the quarter-final. Nadal will play Tomas Berdych in the fourth round and could face Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-final.
On the women's side Navratilova said that there was not a clear favorite out of the top 10 ranked players: 'The ideal thing would be to have a favorite or even three or four. Honestly, there are 11 players who could become world no. 1 and Serena is not on the list! I find it unbelievable.'
Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki lost in the third round to Maria Sharapova in the third round on Friday.
