Roger Federer: Do not put pressure on Next Generation

Roger Federer believes expectations add to the pressure on the younger players on the Tour. The Next Generation players often get asked when they will be able to overtake Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, but the Swiss said they should take one step at a time.

Asked about what Stefanos Tsitsipas can achieve in the future, Federer replied: 'I am not a very good judge sometimes. Sometimes I play with people and they are like, they are okay. And then a couple of years after they got to number one. He hit the ball well but I do not like to make predictions and I do not like to put pressure on guys as well and call guys out and say, "This guy, watch out for him" and then if he doesn't (have success) it's a failure. I can only judge from this year what he has done and he looked very nice. He is definitely gonna be a top player for many many years to come. It depends on how they handle the pressure, we all go through it. The problem is that such called experts sometimes just throw around like those "future Grand Slam champions, future world No. 1s" too easily. Let's ask Andy Murray how hard it was to get to world number one, I think that answers the questions to how easy or hard it is to get to world number one.

Took him, I don't know how many Grand Slam finals, and how many sweat and tears and work. It was the same for all us as well at the top, Grand Slams just do not walk into the locker room and there you have one. So you really have to earn it and nowadays it's become more physical, more tough than ever probably and I just think that when guys say that about young guys, you can say like "You are probably gonna be a top ten, I am sure he will be around, he will have chances but to always say "he will for sure win", we just never have a guarantee. From that standpoint people come out and watch the games because they don't know who is gonna win, and that's the beauty of our sport and any sports.'
