Serena Williams expects to win every time she steps on court, says coach

In an interview to Tennis Channel Patrick Mouratoglou commented on her player Serena Williams's loss to Karolina Pliskova. The French coach said: "Knowing Serena for so many years, every time she steps on a tennis court she expects to win the tournament and everybody expects her to do that. She is the ultimate competitor, she is used to winning now for two decades and she is prepared to win all the time, she puts so much effort, so much intensity and mental intensity and she is so much involved emotionally in whatever she is doing on a tennis court, that, of course, she expects to win and when she doesn't it's very disappointing for her, so she is also very disappointed, she didn't expect it to be easy at all, she knows that the competition is hard, that there a lot of women who play a very good tennis but she also knows that she is a top player and when she is ready she is always able to win a tournament.'

On Serena getting called foot fault on one of the four match points she had, Mouratoglou added: 'It's always disappointing when it happens especially because it's not something you see happening in any match and it happens to her, but I do not blame that for that loss and she did not blame that either.'

Serena had played the Hopman Cup in Perth to prepare for the Australian Open. She will have a light schedule this year, as she is not committed to any of the tournament scheduled on the WTA Calendar of February.
