There are some similarities between Tsitsipas and Sampras - Philippoussis
Mark Philippoussis believes that there are some similarities between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Pete Sampras. Both of them have Greek grassroots and they are combined with a powerful and big game. “Definitely similarities", Philippoussis confessed in an interview. "(There’s a) huge Greek population here and they’re out in force watching him and his practice and his other matches and it’s great to see. Look, number one, he’s a great kid, great family, and I’ve been speaking to him, his dad, for a few years - when we see each other we talk in Greek. So it’s great to see him just improve every year and just watch his beautiful game, and I was happy for him. He stepped up, he believed in himself and he played a beautiful match. Great head on his shoulders. Hungry. Works hard and certain parts of his game have improved - for me, especially the serve.’’
Philippoussis believes that Novak Djokovic is the favourite to conquer his crown. “The second half of the year was incredible, what he achieved, and no-one expected that and I just feel like he found his game, he found his mojo, he looked like the Djokovic that was dominating years ago", said Philippoussis. “He’s relaxed on the court, he’s moving as good as ever, he’s got his confidence back, he’s getting angry on the court; I think he plays better when he shows a bit of emotion and he gets angry. And that guy in best-of-five sets when he’s moving well and he’s physically and mentally strong, he’s just a nightmare to play against. You’ve got to be hitting shots, winners, consistently that you normally don’t hit to have a chance of beating him, unless something crazy happens. He’s my pick, still.’’
