Andy Murray could be back competing in a year, says surgeon
In an interview to the Guardian, the surgeon Jason Stockwell commented on the new hip surgery that Andy Murray went through last week in London in his attempt to have a better quality life and possibly play tennis again. “I do hope Andy returns to competition. He could be back within a year – and, with strong, flexible, painless hips. There is no reason why he shouldn’t be competitive", Stockwell said.
“Fortunately, not too many young people develop arthritis of their hips – but, when they do – the commonest cause is sport, followed by injury."
Flavia Pennetta believes that Murray should have not held a pre-Australian Open conference call to announce his possible retirement from tennis. There was an enormous buzz by players and media on the British player, who was in tears speaking to reporters. Pennetta believes the three-time Grand Slam winner did not benefit from it: 'It was a drama. I felt for him because he is a great guy and champion. It was sad. Not being able to play due to an injury is the worst thing. Your body told you to stop. I would not have done a pre-tournament conference call saying "I do not know if I will play". I would have avoided it because everyone is asking you to insist on something that hurts you because you want to play but you cannot do it anymore. He will give himself a shot to play Wimbledon, I do not think he will play on clay. He underwent hip surgery in order to have a better quality of life. He is 31 years old, and not being able to walk with your son is the worst thing. His goal is to feel pain-free, then if he manages to play it's an extra boost', said the Italian. After winning her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2015 US Open, Pennetta announced she would have retired at the end of the year.
