ATP Sofia: Daniil Medvedev tops Marton Fucsovics to win the title

The world no. 16 and 3rd seed Daniil Medvedev has become the fourth Sofia Open champion after a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Marton Fucsovics in an hour and 21 minutes, lifting the fourth ATP title from the sixth final. The young Russian lost the opening set against Robin Haase in the second round but he never looked back after that, winning the following eight sets and going all the way for the first success in 2019 after three titles claimed in the previous season. Daniil and Marton played a tight match in Monte Carlo last year and that certainly wasn't the case today, with the Russian saving two out of three break points and pushing the rival to the limits on the second serve (Fucsovics was three from 22) to create nine break chances and convert four.

Marton repelled two break points in the opening game with forehand winners and another one at 2-2 when he forced an error from Medvedev who finally found the way to move in front with a break at love in game seven when Fucsovics netted a backhand. The Hungarian blasted a forehand down the line winner to pull the break back in the following game and level the score at 4-4 before Daniil secured another break in game nine after a long rally, closing the opener with a hold at 15 for a 6-4. Marton couldn't find the way to impose his shots from the baseline and Daniil went 2-1 up in the second set with a forehand return winner in game three, repelling two break points at 3-2 to remain in front.

Serving to stay in the match in the ninth game, Marton suffered a break at love to hand the win to his opponent who has proved his abilities on the hard court once again after winning the most matches on the Tour on this surface in 2018.
