Roger Federer: 'My priority was not a Grand Slam title after my 2016 break'

In a recent interview Roger Federer reflected on his amazing comeback to the highest tennis level after taking a six-month break in 2016. The Swiss won 2017 and 2018 Australian Open, 2017 Wimbledon and became the oldest world No. 1 player. "I loved it, I could not believe that I got back to the world number one especially after my knee surgery", said Federer. "I tried really hard to just get back in shape and hopefully give myself another look at another few titles, maybe another Grand Slam title, who knows, but I had gone through a few where to accept that other good players maybe just a touch better. I still had very successful years but I had not won a Grand Slam over four years so clearly coming back, the number one priority was not just really winning a Grand Slam. It was just getting back healthy, and that I was able to win three, get back to world No. 1 is much more than I could have ever asked for, so comeback has been great and this is just the icing on the cake. That's what I am doing right now, so I am really enjoying myself."

Federer commented on why he often plays well at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship. The Swiss player won seven titles over 12 appearances and on Sunday ahead of the tournament he said: "Conditions clearly play a role in it, it gives you a better chance to win the tournament and then it's also a place you might naturally peak during the part of the season for some reasons. Maybe February is a good time after the Australian Open usually, I am coming in fresh from the off-season and I have just had a break after the Australian Open, and you sort of bounce back here in Dubai and maybe that's also been one of the reasons. And then it's true, the familiarity of the stadium, the people who run it, the city you feel comfortable. I do not know what it is, it could be a lot of things but it definitely starts with what's the place in the calendar and also the conditions of play."
