Kevin Anderson feels confident after making winning return in Miami
Sidelined since the Australian Open due to an elbow injury, the world no. 7 Kevin Anderson has made a winning return in Miami, beating Jaume Munar 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and 11 minutes. As was expected, Kevin needed some time to find the rhythm, winning just two points more than the Spaniard and prevailing with one extra break that made all the difference. Both players had more winners than unforced errors and Anderson secured the win with the better performance in the shortest points up to four strokes, breaking at the beginning of the final set and delivering five easy holds to secure the place in the third round.
Anderson was pleased with the way he performed after missing two months, saying his serve wasn't ready at Indian Wells and that everything seems to be o.k now. Also, he had to receive a medical timeout after feeling the pain in the hip but that should be fine as well, having an off day on Sunday and preparing for the third-round clash against Jao Sousa where he is the favorite as well.
"I have been out for about nine weeks and it has been quite an interesting period despite an injured elbow, going to the gym and being able to train. The only thing is, I wasn't able to serve and that was the frustrating part, being so close to making a comeback but postponing that with serve not being at 100%. It feels great to be back and this win against Munar gives me a lot of confidence. I felt ready to return at Indian Wells, hitting 30, 40, 50 serves in practice which didn't end up well on the following day, it was too much too soon, just needed a few more days to put myself in a position to compete in Miami.
After not competing for so long, I started to feel the pain in my hip a few days ago, maybe some nerve, I don't know, hope that will be o.k before my next day, having a day off tomorrow and feeling strong. Each match is different, the mentality, the way you feel on the court, and it is important to find the emotion quickly, especially after a long break. At the end of the match, I was focused on my serve points and it all came out well."
