Things got away from Roger Federer and Nadal in tennis politics - Courier

Speaking on Tennis Channel, the former world no. 1 Jim Courier commented on Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer meeting each other in Indian Wells to speak about the future of men's tennis after the non-renewal of the term of the ATP Chief Executive Chris Kermode, who will leave the board at the end of the year. "It seems like they have realized that things got away from them," said Courier. "Novak Djokovic has really kind of assumed power of the top guys. Roger and Rafa have been involved for a long time, they were very prominent in the discussions about prize money in the Grand Slams years ago getting the Grand Slams to agree to give more to the players but I think they took their foot off the pedal a little bit and said, Okay, we have done a lot, now it's Novak's turn to try and kind of steer the ship. Maybe they were not as happy with how the ship is being steered and now they have decided they need to re-engage."

Fellow expert Jon Wertheim added: "Novak is clearly taking the role, that's fine. Roger, Rafa both had this role. They said, 'Listen, you want change that's one thing but what's your alternative, tell us, what we are getting as an alternative.' They feel like they have not been clearly articulated a plan of what's going to come next. And keep in mind that they said that we met for a coffee. That was not on site. Rafa went to Roger's house that he is renting here so they really got away from the tenants and had this discussion."
