Davis Cup: South Africa to host Bulgaria in Cape Town on September 13-14

After four Davis Cup Group II ties that took place during the weekend behind us, the remaining eight clashes will go on in September and South Africa will host Bulgaria in one of the most exciting encounters of the entire round. Tennis South Africa has announced that the Kelvin Grove Club in Cape Town will serve as host, meeting the Bulgarians on the hard court. After three wins over Estonia, Slovenia and Denmark in 2017, South Africa returned to Group I for the first time since 2013 last year, losing ties against Israel and Portugal to hit Group II once again.

They will have a chance to compete on a higher level again if they beat Bulgaria, standing as the favorites in front of the home crowd and with Lloyd Harris in the squad. The 22-year-old Cape Town native has already won nine Davis Cup rubbers and should lead his country towards another triumph, with both Kevin Anderson and Grigor Dimitrov missing the tie just a few days after the US Open. The Kelvin Grove Club will be the place to be for every tennis fan in South Africa those days, with JA Cape Town junior event taking place in the week after the Davis Cup tie, gathering some of the best youngsters in the world as a part of the Grade A series with other five tournaments.

“We decided to take this Davis Cup tie to Cape Town for two reasons - firstly the core of the team are based in the city and the players have been keen to play in their home town for a while now. Secondly, with the ITF Grade A taking place in the Mother City, shortly after the tie, it provided a unique opportunity to create a week-long festival of tennis at Kelvin Grove,” said Tennis SA CEO, Richard Glover.

Team captain Marcos Ondruska said, “This should prove to be a spectacular event with the likes of a Grigor Dimitrov potentially showing up. It is home ground to the majority of the team so there should be great support willing our team forward. The entire team is ecstatic at the prospect of playing in front of their friends and families.”
