Will Johanna Konta's difficulties come to an end?
Will Johanna Konta's difficulties come to an end? The Briton is experiencing a negative period, which has lasted for more than a year, during which she had very different performances compared to those in 2016 and 2017.
Konta, after obtaining good results, winning three titles in two years, including the Miami Open, entered into a spiral in which her tennis was technically, physically and mentally blocked.
Also conditioned by some injury and some physical problems, Konta has had mainly problems managing pressure, especially in the most important matches. This is something that has been happening with regularity in women's tennis, and something which many protagonists have experienced.
However, it amazes that a tennis player so physically prepared as the Briton has had many difficulties also to maintain her form and her athletic condition during the last fifteen months. Without athletic condition, her performances dropped, and her involution has therefore covered the technical and mental aspect. Something that her team has not managed to contain until now.
From the beginning of the year, she reached the second round in Brisbane, where she was defeated by Ajla Tomljanovic, the second round at the Australian Open, where she was eliminated by Garbine Muguruza and the quarterfinals in Acapulco, where she lost to Donna Vekic. She had ups and downs also during the firsts Premier Mandatory tournaments of the season.
In 2018, she reached only the final at the Nature Valley Open, in Nottingham, in June, a match lost in three sets against Ashleigh Barty.
After yet another early exit in Indian Wells, in Miami, she will have to try to get good results and good placements, because, historically, the clay season has never been positive for her. Konta will perhaps have her best chances between the grass swing and the indoor hard-court season.
In any case, it is surprising this tennis player, former world no. 4, is now relegated to the margins. Will she be able to reverse this trend?
