WTA Race leader Petra Kvitova withdraws from Roland Garros with arm injury
World no. 6 and WTA Race leader Petra Kvitova has withdrawn from Roland Garros due to a left forearm injury. Petra was supposed to play her first round match on Court Suzanne-Lenglen against Sorana Cirstea but she has been replaced with a lucky loser Kaja Juvan from Slovenia. The two-time Wimbledon champion skipped only one Roland Garros since 2008 and was the semi-finalist in 2012 when Maria Sharapova halted her in the battle for the place in the final. Calf injury forced Petra to retire in Rome in the third set against Maria Sakkari and an arm injury proved to be too serious ahead of the first match in Paris, skipping the most important WTA tournament on clay and switching the focus to grass where she should be back at her best.
The Czech is one of four players with multiple titles in 2019, lifting the crown in Sydney and Stuttgart and losing in the final at the Australian Open and Dubai. Kiki Bertens defeated her in the quarter-final in Madrid before that retirement in Rome.
"I'm so disappointed to have to announce my withdrawal from Roland Garros. I've had pain in my left forearm for a few weeks and last night on MRI confirmed a grade two tear, which unfortunately could get a lot worse if I play today. Two years ago, I made my comeback here at Roland Garros and I'm truly sad not to be able to play this year. It is a really tough decision to make and I wish the tournament all the best for a successful event and can't wait to be back in 2020."
