Bernard Tomic pulls out late from Washington

Australian tennis player Bernard Tomic has withdrawn late from the Citi Open in Washington

The 26-year-old pulled out of the event on Tuesday just hours before his scheduled first round match against Andrey Rublev of Russia. 

Tomic last played at last week's Atlanta Open, where he retired his quarterfinal clash to fellow compatriot Alex de Minaur after just 39 minutes of play. 

The Australian called a trainer for a torso pain before retiring the match while 6-2 3-0 down. 

Tomic was expected to play on the hard courts of Washington for the first time since 2016. 

Despite the Atlanta retirement, Tomic appeared to be ready to play in Washington for the first.time since 2016.

The Australian has played four times so far in his career at the Washington event. 

Tomic, who debuted at the Citi Open in 2013, made four consecutive appearances at the tournament between 2013 and 2016. 

Tomic made the Washington round-of-16 in his debut before picking up back-to-back second round exits at the tournament.

In his last Washington campaign, Tomic reached the round-of-16 before losing to Ivo Karlovic.

Tomic will be replaced in Washington by lucky loser Peter Gojowzcyk.
