Cori Gauff reveals how many tournaments she is going to play before US Open
Cori Gauff has been the youngest player on the WTA ranking list for more than a year now, but she is far from an ordinary upcoming youngster! The 15-year-old sensation has had an incredible journey in the last two years, playing in the final of the junior US Open at the age of 13, winning junior Roland Garros and Orange Bowl at the age of 14 and achieving notable results on the professional events well before turning 15. Super talented American from Delray Beach was one of the best stories at Wimbledon, advancing into the fourth round (the youngest qualifier at the biggest tennis event in the Open era) as the first player since Jennifer Capriati in 1991!
Showing her abilities and skills against much older and more experienced rivals, Cori, took down one of her idols Venus Williams in the first round, followed by two more wins against Magdalena Rybarikova and Polona Hercog that propelled her into the second week at Wimbledon while her coevals were preparing for the start of the junior tournament! In the battle for the quarter-final, Simona Halep proved to be too strong but this was an incredible result for the youngster who has made a massive jump through the rankings, cracking the top-150 and marching towards the goal she set ahead of 2019, to enter the top-100 by the end of the year.
That achievement will probably have to wait a little bit since Gauff can't play the full schedule yet due to WTA age restrictions, having to choose her program wisely before turning 16 next March. Cori will almost certainly receive the US Open main draw wild card and she is going to play one tournament ahead of New York, hoping for good results that would push her further up through the rankings and set the ground for the ultimate goal, to become the greatest player of all time!
“That Wimbledon run was like a rollercoaster. Right now I’m going up, I don’t know when I’m going to come back down and finally get back to normal, it’s been a great, great ride for me,” Gauff said. “It was great to see my parents that excited and how much support they had for me. Playing Venus Williams was my favorite moment, you dream of it so many times and then you are on the court against her. I’ve gotten so many messages saying that have been looking up to me and I guess it’s a big responsibility although I feel honored that I have inspired somebody.”
