Daniel Brands Announces Retirement from Professional Tennis

Tennis - World No. 201 Daniel Brands, of Germany, has announced his retirement from professional tennis. According to The Tennis Tour Talk website, Brands made the announcement when he spoke to the Bavarian radio station Bayerischer Rundfunk, saying, "Two years ago I had to undergo a knee injury and the goal was to come back and to return to the Top 200. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. I am not getting any younger and I think it is the right decision to put an end on playing tour-tennis and to focus on new tasks.”
Brands peaked at No. 51 in the rankings in August 2013. Among his career highlights, he reached the semi-finals on the ATP Tour on four occasions, reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2010 and played for Germany in the Davis Cup 2013. He won seven titles on the ATP Challenger Tour. He also won 3 doubles titles on the ATP Challenger circuit.
Among his best results this year were qualifying for the ATP Sofia Open where he beat World No. 22 Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round of the main draw before going down to Martin Klizan in the second round.
According to Brands, his best moments were reaching the semi-finals of the 2009 Munich event, the third round of the 2009 Hamburg Open and the last 16 at Wimbledon.
