ATP Montreal: Andrey Rublev e Alexander Zverev stun No. 3 seeds
Russia's Andrey Rublev and Alexander Zverev of Germany have staged a doubles upset on the opening day of the Montreal Masters to progress into the round-of-16.
Rublev, 21, and 22-year-old Zverev sent packing third seeds Mate Pavic and Bruno Soares as they won 6-3 7-6 (3) in an hour and 17 minutes of play.
Both pairs were heavily struggling on their serve in the first set but Rublev and Zverev managed to come up big in two games when they were facing break points.
Rublev and Zverev won the opener after converting 2-of-2 of their break point chances and saving 1-of-4 of Pavic and Soares' break point opportunities in the first set.
Rublev and Zverev then started the second set with a break but the set had to be resolved in a tie-break after the rising stars failed to serve out for the match in the 10th game.
The two pairs were tied at 3-3 after the opening six points of the tie-break before Rublev and Zverev won four points in a row to seal a straight-set win.
Rublev and Zverev will play next against either Peter Polansky and Brayden Schnur or Marcus Daniell and Laslo Djere.
