Simona Halep: I wanted to break free of what was in the past

Reigning Wimbledon champion Simona Halep said that she is ready to commence her Rogers Cup campaign in Canada, a tournament where she is the defending champion. The Romanian outlasted American Sloane Stephens in three sets last year to win this title.

In a recent interview, she said that she has gotten adequate rest before this tour and is looking forward to playing these tournaments. “I got some rest, I recharged my batteries, there have been two weeks when I did not touch my tennis racket. I wanted to break free of what was in the past. Now, I’m starting over for it is an important period.”

“It will be a first tough week till I find my pace. The tournament will be difficult, but I do not get stressed or panic,” Halep said.

What’s interesting is that Halep is set to play doubles as well. She is set to pair with 16-year-old Canadian tennis player, Leylah Annie Fernandez and they are set to take on Nicole Melichar – Kveta Peschke in the opener.

“We hope to play well. I am glad to play with her for she is still young and she needs experience,” Simona stated.

Halep recently won her maiden Wimbledon title when she took out Serena Williams in a one-side match in straight sets. This was Halep's second Major overall after she had already lifted the Roland Garros title.
