Kei Nishikori reacts to Richard Gasquet loss at Montreal Masters
World No. 6 Kei Nishikori admitted he didn't play his best tennis against France's Richard Gasquet and an elbow pain didn't help him either.
After a first round bye at the Montraal Masters, No. 5 seed Nishikori got edged out by 66th-ranked Gasquet 6-7 (6) 6-2 7-6 (4) in an three-hour and nine-minute second round battle.
The Japanese recovered from a break down in the third set and even had a match point in the 12th game before losing the tie-break.
Kei on his play and injury. "I couldn't have a good feel, I was forced to play patiently," Nishikori said post-match, per GAORA SPORTS.
"I was away from playing matches for a while, so I was a bit rusty and he was playing really well too.
"My service was not good, I was struggling with my serve and couldn't deal with his backhand. He hit various shots with his backhand, so it was difficult to attack."
Shortly after the loss, Nishikori pulled out from his doubles first round match with Grigor Dimitrov.
"My elbow was hurting a bit during the match, so I decided not to play the doubles," Nishikori added.
"I've been trying out different ways to heal it, but it's still hurting. Hopefully it will get better next week."
