Maria Sharapova can be like Venus Williams, play until 38 - Former No. 5

Anna Chakvetadze spoke about Maria Sharapova's chances to compete at the highest level again after dealing with a shoulder injury. "It's difficult to predict something now. Maria had several breaks and it's clear that surgery is not the best option. Players do not usually want to go through surgery. But if nothing can help, you have to do it. Andy Murray had surgery too. Maria has an old injury that may not have allowed her to play at her best. But she does not need to be in a rush. If you look at Venus Williams, you can play until 37 or 38 years of age. I do not know Maria can mentally be ready for it. After 30 years it seems difficult to come back especially after surgery. But tennis players miraculously come back and some of them make a breakthrough at 30."

St. Petersburg tournament organizer Vladimir Kamelzon said: "Her matches will become a show like in St. Petersburg earlier this year. She cannot totally get healed. It's important to understand that her body is not made up of a knife, she is not 22 years old, she plays at such a professional level, girls train a lot physically and no tactics or technique is as important as the health. Everyone would like to see her compete, even if in exhibitions as younger people can get inspired by her. In order to bring her in tournaments, organizers pay money, she draws packed crowd, the interest for her got bigger and Maria's team is trying their best. Maria is a world-class athlete, she is so popular."
