Petra Kvitova withdraws from Toronto with forearm injury
World no. 6 Petra Kvitova has withdrawn from the next week's Rogers Cup in Toronto with an ongoing left forearm injury. Petra has played only one tournament after Rome, skipping Roland Garros and pre-Wimbledon events, losing in the fourth round at the All England Club to Johanna Konta and deciding she needs more time to recover and get ready for Cincinnati and the US Open. This puts Wimbledon finalist Serena Williams in the top-8 seeds which should help her to embrace a strong run in Canada and chase the title in the first appearance at this tournament since 2015.
Kvitova has been one of the best players in 2019 so far, winning the title in Sydney and losing in the final at the Australian Open to Naomi Osaka in three tight sets. Belinda Bencic halted the Czech in the final in Dubai before Petra went all the way in Stuttgart, losing the rhythm a little bit after that and struggling with that arm injury for more than two months now. Petra made Canada Open debut back in 2008 at the age of 18, needing a few years to find the form in Montreal and Toronto before claiming the title in 2012 after beating three top-10 players. That was her last notable result at Rogers Cup, failing to reach the quarter-final since 2013 and losing six of the last 11 matches there.
"I'm so disappointed to have to withdraw from the Rogers Cup," Kvitova said. "My forearm injury is continuing to cause some problems so, on the advice of my medical team, I have made the decision not to travel to Canada. I will really miss being in Toronto this year and wish Karl and the tournament every success."
