McEnroe draws perfect player, mentions Federer, Djokovic, Nadal
In an interview to Corriere, the seven-time Grand Slam winner John McEnroe was asked to draw his perfect player. The American said: "Federer's forehand. Djokovic's backhand. Federer's serve. Nadal's volleying game, he has a great touch and he never misses volleys when he comes to the net. Federer or Djokovic's body. And Nadal's mind."
Asked if he loves football, McEnroe replied: "As a young guy I played for four years at the Trinity School, and I still play football sometimes, especially in charity events. Now I do not watch football a lot, but when I met Pelè, who was the Federer of football, was big. With that open smile, just like Guga Kuerten. And I got excited when I visited the Maracanà Stadium, the Wimbledon of football, just like when I met Diego Armando Maradona in Croatia, like 15 years ago on the Champions Tour. I also admire Lionel Messi a lot and all the champions who are unbelievably talented. But I always watch World Cup football matches."
Asked how he would sum up his career through one word, McEnroe concluded: "I don't think I could sum it up into one word. Taking a word from the president: amazing. Did I ever lose? I don't think I ever lost a match? But I may have a short memory (laughter). It's been quite a ride. I mean, I obviously played on the main tour for 15 years. I sort of include what I've been doing the past 25 years because I think in certain ways it's made me a better man and person, made me appreciate what I did before more actually because I was sort of disgruntled. I think when you're at the end of your actual professional career, I always refer to that old Connie Hawkins phrase: The older I get, the better I used to be."
