Nick Kyrgios doesn't have a good team around, says McNamee

On Twitter and then in interviews to the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, the former world No. 1 in doubles Paul McNamee commented on Nick Kyrgios's controversial behaviour in Cincinnati. McNamee said: ‘‘Well history shows it’s always a risky business for Nick to play the week after winning a tournament ... he expends far more emotional energy than most players so is completely fried at the end of a big week. We need to cut him some slack.

‘‘We know after that huge effort he put in in Washington - emotionally, mentally, and physically - there was nothing positive going to come out of playing the next week. Nothing positive. We saw it in Shanghai two years in a row when he won respectively Bejing and Tokyo, he had meltdowns. He has meltdowns after he has a massive week where he goes the whole way. He needs to be playing for somebody, he needs to be part of a team. Nick, I don’t think, is dying for his team. What I’m hinting at is that I don’t think he’s got his team right."

Meanwhile, Richard Gasquet's coach Thierry Ascione spoke about Frenchman reaching the Cincinnati semi-finals: "No one expected it. He had courage, he fought against himself, with his body, he had very difficult days, nights and training sessions, it's unbelievable what he managed to do. His transition from defence to offence and vice-versa are very good. I am surprised by his forehand, he can switch rhythm, go through the ball and come forward to the net. He suffered a lot between Montreal and Paris."
